Illinois: Chicago and Rockford

Welcome back. I just realized that I had not hit publish on our last couple week of blogs. So, for all of you SoMers who were waiting, I apologizes for my lapse.

This week we are in Illinois, the land of Lincoln and also a lot of corruption.

Amber's story:

Corruption abounds in Chicago, especially in the 70s and 80s. When murders happen in the south side of Chicago there is one precinct that will do anything to get black men to confess to murders, including torture. With a number of these men now on death row, it fell on the wrongfully convicted men to share their stories. These men formed what was became known as the Death Row 10. They were able to shed light on the horrible treatment of Area 2 police department. This would lead to radical changes and a moratorium on the death penalty in Illinois.

Celina's story:

When Kyrian's mother left him in the care of her friend's father so that she could go look for a job in Iowa, so that she could provide a better life for herself and her son, she did not expect for tragedy to strike. When a little boy's dismembered remains are found in a lagoon in Chicago, they were found to be Kyrian's. Why was he murdered and put in a lagoon? Who could have done such a thing to this sweet little boy? It is hard to say as Kamel Harris, the man who was entrusted to care for him, has his own story to tell.
