Kentucky: Louisville and Bowling Green

Welcome back SoM family. This week we talked about another hard topic. It was discussed in both Celina’s and my cases that we shared, this is domestic violence. It is an epidemic that has been increasing over the past six months. This is an important topic to discuss and bring more awareness to it as like many things there is a stigma associated with it. I have heard it said before why don’t they just leave the relationship? It is never that simple and I hope talking about these brave women who endured abuse by those who were supposed to be their loved ones helps bring more focus on and support in helping them.

Amber’s story:

This week I my story focuses on two women and how they were brutally murdered by their partners. In telling this story I shared how the Domestic Violence Prevention Coordinating Council and with the Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee formed. It took one woman Marcia Roth to question why Patricia Fortney had been violently murdered shot down in the street by her husband. When looking into the case she found that Patricia had done everything she could do, she got the restraining order, she had gone to the local women’s shelter. She had moved and didn’t provide any information to her husband. However the courts failed to protect her and in the end she wound up murdered. Then 25 years later the murder of Amanda Berry who was found murdered in her boyfriend’s basement.

Celina’s story:

Katie Autry had dreams and those dreams lead her to moving to Bowling Green from her small town and going to college. She did what many college age kids do, got a job lived in the dorms and hung out with her friends and going to parties. One night she was out with her roommate at a party when she decided she wanted to go back to the dorms. One of the fraternity pledges offered to give her a ride back and she took it. She made it back to her room, but she didn't know she had been followed and when two men entered her room while she was on the phone with her roommate, one of the last things her roommate heard was that Katie was scared. Not much later in the early morning the fire alarm in the dorm would go off and the fire department found Katie in her room being burned alive.
